Body mass index (BMI) is measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women. It is easy to use for adults, because they have stopped growing. However for children this calculation should be used in conjunction with the child's age and gender. If you wish to check out the weight status of a child, put in their height and weight, but ignore the comments that follow. Simply make a note of their BMI and click below to download the appropriate growht chart to plot their BMI to find out where they measure aginast a general population. The idea is that the 50th centile (red curve) represents normal development. If the child has crossed the 91st centile they are classified overweigtht, and if they have gone above the 98th centile then they are classified as very overweight (obese).
